The Importance of Biodegradable Beauty
Every week, it seems that there’s another news story about how our buying habits, particularly in the beauty and health industries, are affecting the environment. Just this week, news broke that flushable wet wipes are clogging up the sewers and causing all kinds of environmental issues, and we have all seen just how damaging plastic has been to the oceans (eight million tons of plastic is dumped into the oceans every year). Now, more so than ever, it’s important to be thoughtful when it comes to your purchasing choice. We encourage our customers and our readers to choose brands that are eco-friendly, sustainable and biodegradable, like KOHA is proud to be.
Zero Waste reports that the global cosmetics industry produces over 120 billion units of packaging every year, much of which, shockingly, isn’t recyclable. We were horrified to read that the average plastic moisturiser pot can take almost 1000 years to decompose. But even with packaging that can be recycled, half of us just don’t bother to do it.
Things need to change.
We’re working to make recycling that little bit easier in your day-to-day life. We’re very proud to say that the full range of our KOHA konjac sponges, including our Kids range, is completely biodegradable. You can use your konjac sponge every day for up to eight weeks, after which you can pop it on your compost heap, and watch it break down and become part of the environment. The natural structure of the product means that it biodegrades quickly and safely, so you’re not adding more to landfill or littering the environment either. You can simply pop your sponge on the heap along with your fruit, vegetable and plant leftovers, as the konjac will behave and break down in the same way.
Our toothbrushes are also biodegradable, using sustainable MOSO bamboo, which is also panda-friendly. We deliberately chose materials that were environmentally-friendly, durable, recyclable and cruelty-free, as we believe that a great beauty routine shouldn’t harm our surroundings in order to be effective.
It’s so important to choose products that help to support the environment in this way, as much as you can. Indie beauty brands have been working in this way for years, but it’s increasingly the case that big high street brands are cottoning on to the importance of this movement too, and creating products that everyone can enjoy, but without the impact of traditional plastics and other non-biodegradable elements. We were delighted to introduce our biodegradable and plastic free soaps, shampoos and conditioner bars to our range of KOHA products. Our KOHA bar range is a great alternative to traditional plastic-bottled soaps and shampoo and conditioners, with absolutely no leftover waste.
And the bigger beauty brands are getting on-board too, with brands like Guerlain and MAC offering initiatives like discounts when you return packaging to be refilled or recycled. It’s a small gesture that makes a huge difference to the environment, and we can’t wait to see the impact that these changes will make in years to come.
